Welcome To Room #9 Metal Heads... Creeper is Here!

I just had to write about my new fixation with the Southern Metal scene. Folks around the world probably don't realize that the epicenter of hard rock and heavy metal is in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. So many rock legends reside in the Texas Metroplex as well as new groups breaking out.

Lets take a look at a few names you may know from the area: Pantera, King Diamond, Omen, Rigor Mortis, Damageplan, World Beneath World, Drowning Pool, Lockjaw.. so many more I can go on forever.

My taste for Texas metal really grew when I use to listen to the legendary Z-Rock radio network and their new music showcase the Shredder of the Week. 1 out of 5 always came from the DFW area and several went on to make it big, such as the almighty Pantera!

Well, my latest group to get turned on to is also from Dallas and known as Creeper. They just released their debut album "Welcome to Room #9" on DSN Music, also home to Omen and World Beneath World. Creeper gets it so right and really understand and translates their metal roots perfectly on the release.

Several tracks punch you in the mouth right out of the gate like "M for Murder", "Now", and "Timmy" to name a few out of this killer mix. The production really shows and now wonder, it was produced by industry veteran Tye Robison who was also responsible for production on Drowning Pool and Gravity Kills albums.

Each track off the album kicks ass, just pure southern in-your face metal! It also has a classic metal feel bringing back a sound reminiscent of old school Armored Saint, Metal Church, and Saxon.

I searched YouTube for a few videos of the guys doing a live show, and was not disappointed! These guys hit the stage ready to rage! Guitarist Jimi Fritz and vocalist Daniel "Danimal" Watkins are just outstanding showmen. I would pay to see these guys at a show any day!

Glad to see another project from the Dallas area make the national scene! I would suggest searching iTunes for Creeper... you will not regret it my fellow headbanger!

22 Heavy Metal Bands Set to Play ‘World’s Biggest Rock and Roll Party’

The first-ever, nearly nonstop, 48-hour rock and roll party and festival on The Strip is certain to go into the record books for many reasons, and not just because it’s competing head-to-head with the pedal-to-the-metal IndyCar race weekend’s thrills and spills.

First, no less than 22 hard rock and heavy metal bands are scheduled to play on two stages this weekend as part of The 48 Hours Festival. Secondly, whenever there’s a break in the hells-a-poppin’ onstage antics, there’s the death-defying, big-air freestyle motocross jump action. The host hotel casinos Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Excalibur are setting up their own festival fairgrounds on The Strip directly across from the Luxor.

Organizers are proud to call it a “debauchery weekend” for “the world’s biggest rock and roll party” complete with a hangover brunch at Mandalay Bay Beach with Korn’s Jonathan Davis making a rare DJ appearance Sunday.

The 48 Hours Festival sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink begins tomorrow with a House of Blues kickoff party at Mandalay Bay featuring Steel Panther. Doors open Saturday at 2 p.m. with Orange Blossom Special. Then the following bands alternate until Avenged Sevenfold closes out with a show starting at 9 p.m.: Adelitas Way, Hell or Highwater, Black Tide, Escape the Fate, Rev Theory, Bullet for My Valentine, Hatebreed, Hollywood Undead and Five Finger Death Punch.

The official after-party is scheduled for Saturday night at House of Blues hosted by Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed. There’ll be an all-star jam with many of the rockers sitting in with the Sin City Sinners, plus Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy, to get the fun started. It isn’t all about the guys, though: Special guests from Revolver’s “Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock” issue include Maria Brink of In This Moment, Syd Duran of Valora, Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez of Eyes Set to Kill and the ultra-sexy but controversial Butcher Babes.

On Sunday starting again at 2 p.m., it kicks off with Valora and then alternating bands Eyes Set to Kill, 10 Years, Taking Dawn, Sick Puppies, Art of Dying, Seether, Seven Dust, Three Days Grace, Godsmack and wrapping with Korn. Rockstar’s Metal Mulisha riders Derek Garland, Wes Agee and founder Brian Deegan are making appearances and featuring multiple big-air, freestyle motorcross jump shows.

A two-day weekend ticket is $99 for the 22 bands and $129 onsite. I’m told that if it’s pulled off successfully and with minimal problems, everyone wants it to become another fixture on the annual Las Vegas entertainment calendar. For more information, go to 48HoursFestival.com.

Motörhead Guitarist Michael "Würzel" Burston Dead at 61

This past weekend former Motörhead guitarist, Michael 'Würzel' Burston tragically passed away from ventricular fibrillation caused by heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), at the age of 61.

Motörhead have issued a touching tribute regarding the death of Würz:

"We are greatly saddened to confirm that our long-time friend and comrade Würzel died Saturday at his home. Würz was pouring a Guinness and cracking a joke when he succumbed to a heart attack; at least we know he went with a smile. It is a cliche to say that words cannot describe how we feel, and in this case, other than ones such as 'shit' and 'awful' and 'very very sad' it is true, they really can't. We all shared many many great times together, and what he did for Motörhead is quite simply indelible. As our good friend Steve 'Krusher' Joule said, 'RIP dear Würzel, a rocker and a gentleman."

Burston joined the group in 1984 and lent his musical talents to such albums as Orgasmatron and March ör Die before departing in 1996. Besides his lightning-fast abilities on a six-string, he also made quite a memorable impression on both his bandmates and fans by way of his comedic personality.

The nickname Wurzel was actually given to him back when he served as an army corporal because of a supposed resemblance to a scarecrow named Worzel Gummidge on a British children's TV show. The umlaut was later added over the "u" after Burston joined Motörhead.

In addition to a couple of solo efforts, Burston had also recently formed the band Leader of Down. We will all miss your iron fist Würzel!

World Beneath World Brings Southern Metal Back to the World!

2011 has been a great year for the revival of pure unadulterated metal, a comeback of the genre for sure! So I get totally pumped when I'm turned on to new acts who are carrying on the torch of what made hard rock great in the first place. Well, I have found a new link in the metal chain, and that link is World Beneath World!

This Dallas Texas group breeds from the same genetic pool of the likes of Pantera and Damageplan - literally! World Beneath World's lead singer John Bone, served as the original vocalist for Dimebag's Damageplan in its infancy. Bone then rounded up his boys from his old Texas band Bone Circus and formed World Beneath World. The group has the feel of classic Pantera and that may be because Nein was produced and engineered by Sterling Winfield, who produced Pantera and Damageplan, as well as Mudvayne and other metal up and comers.

After releasing an EP, Bone and the boys found a groove from their southern heavy metal roots and redirected the sound into their new release Nein. I gotta thank those guys at DSN Music for picking another metal masterpiece to distribute to the masses, because Nein kicks ass!

Clever, Nein has nine tracks on it and each one will blow you away! My favs are The New American Way which is just a get down and rock hard single, Sophisticate which guitarist Razz Callahan just shreds on, and even a head bangin cover of The Cars' Candy-O which won't leave your head! All nine tracks stand apart and hold their own. Winfield really took his time and brought the sound out for a new legion of head-bangers to discover this brand of southern metal.

A lot of rockers have come out of the south over the last decade but have fallen into that alt-rock scene - please! Like the ladies say in the bars, we need real men! World Beneath World are the guys you want to party with and maybe share your girlfriend with - they are the real deal! Glad to see a new generation of true metal pioneers emerging from the south! Go download Nein on iTunes or Amazon.com today - totally worth the cash for some in your face metal this summer!

Rob Zombie wins Metal Hammer Magazine's Golden God

Metal veteran Rob Zombie has won Metal Hammer magazine's golden god award at a ceremony in London.

Zombie was presented with the award by Alice Cooper, which Metal Hammer said commemorated his 26 years of "the most raucous rock music and terror inducing films".

Elsewhere rockers Judas Priest won the icons award, while Iron Maiden claimed best UK band.

1,500 people attended the show at the IndigO2, with many dressed as zombies.

Other winners included US band Twisted Sister, who won the inspiration award, and West Midlands band Diamond Head, who claimed the spirit of Hammer prize.

British band Killing Joke won the best album award for their 14th studio record Absolute Dissent with Down guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein named riff lords.

Welsh rockers Skindred were named best live band.

A spokesman for Metal Hammer magazine said: "Seeing metal legends and metal's new blood equally celebrated is something Metal Hammer are proud to make happen."

Rob Zombie performed at the Download festival at the weekend but has been forced to cancel shows on his European tour that were due to take place after 26 June.

Heavy Metal's Birmingham Origins Celebrated

While musical trends come, go and re-appear with all the speed of a Tony Iommi solo, one genre has remained at the forefront of popular culture for over 40 years. Now an exhibition celebrates heavy metal in the city that invented it.

Home of Metal looks back at Birmingham and the Black Country's role as the birthplace of the biggest names in rock.

The area gave rise to legendary bands which went on to have worldwide success including Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest and Napalm Death.

The exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has won the backing of many of the stars, with several lending items such as guitars and stage outfits.

KK Downing, guitarist and one of the founding members of Judas Priest, said he was "fortunate" to have grown up in West Bromwich in the 1950s and 1960s.

He said: "I'm very fortunate in life to have been born at the right time to witness and play a part in the evolution of music.

"I was that fan in the sleeping bag, travelling around festivals listening to rock and blues.

"So many songs were remakes of the original blues artists' classics."

He said as well as the music he grew up listening to, the Black Country itself also influenced the scene.

"We were the kids of blue collar workers. We didn't have cars or money so we just walked around from pub to club and on the corner of every street there was a venue with bands playing."

He said he was pleased to see heavy metal recognised with a museum exhibition.

"I think it's absolutely fantastic. It's a great tribute to all the local lads who did good."

The exhibition has been put together by Capsule, which organises a number of music and arts events around the West Midlands.

Lisa Meyer, from Capsule, said they decided to organise an exhibition of heavy metal to show people another side of the social history of the Black Country and Birmingham.

She said: "It's the first time we've done anything on this scale. We felt this was a bit of social history."

She said they felt the exhibition belonged in a museum because it celebrated "civic pride" and could be enjoyed by a wide range of people.

"It's quite far reaching, from people who listened to the music when it was first around who are now in their 60s, right through to a younger generation who are fans of the music now," she said.
Ummagumma

The exhibition opens with the sounds of the factories which many of the bands grew up in earshot of and which may have given rise to the loud sound of heavy metal.

Visitors walk into a replica 1960s living room to watch an exclusive interview with Ozzy Osbourne about the founding of Black Sabbath in Aston in 1969.

Posters, flyers and photographs from the Birmingham music scene of the 1960s and 70s when bands entertained the city's youth at legendary clubs like Mothers.

The long-gone venue above a suit hire shop in Erdington High Street was where Pink Floyd recorded some of the live set for the album Ummagumma in 1969.

Other installations celebrate Black Sabbath's first three albums with music and images from records including Paranoid and Master of Reality.

The exhibition also looks at the fans with collections loaned from music lovers who have built up their own records of music history in the form of tour t-shirts, tickets and posters.

Costumes, stage props and instruments are also displayed, with people given the chance to don a wig and rock out on guitar or drums in an interactive section.

There is also an exploration of the political side of the music charting the anti-establishment "DIY" movement of the 1980s which gave rise to bands such as Napalm Death.
'Modest backgrounds'

A huge piece of artwork charts the "family tree" of heavy metal and how the various singers and musicians have moved about between bands.

The work was produced by artist and illustrator Bunny Bissoux.

She said a lot of research had gone into charting the links between the big names of heavy metal.

The close links between the scene's musicians in the Black Country is something KK Downing also appreciates.

"Most of the lads, myself included, came from modest backgrounds so it was quite amazing how the whole movement took off."

Home of Metal will run from 18 June to 25 September at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

CD REVIEW: "Blood & Whiskey" by Beyond Perception

I was cruising in Northern Illinois scanning my radio dial and got a chance to catch some heavy metal on my dashboard thanks to local fav Rebel Radio. It’s one of my hobbies, since I always get to hear new voices in the world of metal on their airwaves. I caught some rippin’ vocals that reminded me of Phil Anselmo in his heyday, so I waited to hear the name of the band, and they said Beyond Perception.

I never heard of these guys, so I did a massive Google search and learned Beyond Perception was a new metal band out of Athens Greece, who’ve become quite popular in Europe. The tune I heard on the radio was called “Hydra”- so I checked out the music video on YouTube, it was awesome, totally awesome! These guys are like one of the best kept secrets of metal, makes me wish I was more in tune with the European metal scene.

Beyond Perception just put out their first international release “Blood & Whiskey” exported by DSN Music, with 12 smokin’ tracks! This is true in your face metal, a fresh sound that is closely related to Godsmack or Pantera, 2 of my favs! Besides “Hydra” my ears were blown by “Million Earning Whore”, “Thorn”, “Play With Bullets” and “Black of the Night”.

I would never have known these guys were from Greece, the vocals were solid English, the guitars just shred, and the drums are in your face! What we usually refer to as face removal rock n’ roll! Beyond Perception is touring the UK in Rocktober, I may have to book a flight and check out one of their shows in Ireland!

Lots of heritage metal gods are releasing tons on CDs this year, but for a serious new comer, Beyond Percepton is a must for your iPod collection! “Blood & Whiskey” is available on iTunes, so do it to it and get hooked up, these guys RAWWWWWK!
